The Island Surf Guide

Seven hours out of Auckland is the surf city of Gisborne. There are loads of quality, relatively uncrowded waves around the area. The coast is exposed to an 180 degree swell window, which means options. You'll be able to find The Island by driving to Sponge Bay road out of Gizzy. This is the coast's best wave and features a gnarly left that barrels over shallow reef. Walk out at low tide or paddle out at high.
