Boca Chica:
There are jetties at Boca Chica State Park that protect the Brazos Santiago Pass. Across the pass is Boca Chica. On either side of the jetty are sand bars that tend to be inside of 150 yards from the beach — much better than the beaches up north. The Boca Chica side, accessible by paddling – albeit a really long paddle — across, by boat, or by driving from Brownsville to the south, can also handle strong north and northeast swells that push across the pass and hit the outer bars, producing hollow, punchy peaks.
This area really turns on during hurricane swells that push up through the center of the Gulf of Mexico and make landfall in the Louisiana/Mississippi region. Because the bars sit a ways off the beach, they are better suited to pick up and hold the shape of solid groundswell. On the strongest hurricane events – most notably Hurricane Katrina – even tow surfing becomes a viable option.
