About Makaha Surf Travel
Makaha is classic Oahu, as rich in surf history and story as its far more popularized brethren up on the North Shore. Because of this, Makaha is a break that is passionately protected by the tight-knit community built around it. Mechanically speaking, Makaha can be sliced into four right-hand dominant sections — Point, Bowl, Blowhole, and Inside Reef — though when a big winter West or North-West fills into the bay, the lines become blurred. It is on the giant North-West swells that wash out all but the big-wave venues on the North Shore, that Makaha often turns into the big-wave colosseum that has made it so famous in the annals of surf history. On small-to-medium days, Makaha is a cornucopia of longboards, shortboards, canoes, SUPs, tandem craft, etc., and domain of the locals. Few days go by that riddable surf isn’t present at Makaha — as well as a healthy crowd — so it’s always worth a check when exploring the West Side.
