About Bethany Beach Surf Travel
The assortment of old beach groins along the mile-long boardwalk creates some nice sandbars that can produce some excellent surf. Fall and winter are best, as summertime brings surfing restrictions and flat spells. There’s a boardwalk cam (www.bethanycam.com) that’s handy for lazy surf checks. East Coast writer/photographer and surf pioneer Bill Wise was paralyzed here in the ’60s in a freak surfing accident. Check out his excellent piece on Miki Dora in the volume 8, number 4 issue of The Surfer’s Journal.
The Disciples of Christ originally established Bethany as a summer revival retreat, and it still retains small-town atmosphere. No tacky beach shops here, and it’s remains a dry town (alcohol served in restaurants only). There are at least two dozen churches in the immediate area. This is a great family town where a big night might be ice cream for the kids on the low-key boardwalk.
