About Ulladulla Surf Travel
Ulladulla Bommie:
For a wave of consequence, you can’t go past the bomboras just south of the lighthouse. The Ulladulla Bommie is a heavy wave with a pitching lip followed by a series of hollow and walling sections that will keep you guessing. This wave breaks on a shallow reef out of deep water and has enough power to slap you down and hold you there.
Breaking a few hundred metres out in the bay, the Bommie picks up all swell directions and there can be substantial water movement resulting in a shifting peak. It’s a relatively simple paddle out through the channel, but watch for sneaker sets and a rip that often drags surfers into the impact zone.
This place likes it big, and it can hold clean swells up to fifteen feet. From six feet up its unforgiving nature will surprise those who aren’t wary as the heavy water movement and numerous ledges, crevasses, boils and double-ups that make for an unpredictable and challenging wave. Ultimately, it’s great surfs at places like these that can be the most rewarding.
Golf Course Reef:
Ulladulla is a mecca for south coast surfers due to the variety of options it provides. One of the best waves it provides can be found by driving through the Golf Course where you’ll find a convenient car park. Golf Course reef hosts a quality left-hander, a fast walling ride that pitches over a sharp ledging reef. It starts getting fun from three feet up, and can hold up to eight-feet plus. Golfies loves a bit of size, and just keeps getting better as the swell increases.
If you look around here you’ll find a couple of other options including a right-hand reef just across the bay. This wave will hold sizeable swells and can get almost as good as Golfies. It’s a good option to escape the crowd, and sometimes can be good on smaller days with the right swell direction when Golfies isn’t working. It can pick up smaller NE swells and will work on SW to NW winds.
For a hollower option you could try Crystals, but you’ll need a reasonable size swell and a skill set to match if you want to take it on. This place needs a full on approach, and watch carefully how you kick out here. Nearby beachbreaks at Mollymook are a fun option for beginners.
